Abortion: Not an alternative

Today, the idea of abortion in society has reached all time high levels in the minds of many Americans, especially teenagers. Science, in the past century, has taken the fight against religious beliefs to a higher level as well. Abortion has lately been at the dead center of the fight between science and religion.

Coming from a conservative, religious standpoint, I believe that it is obviously wrong to kill a baby in its beginning stages. The fact of the matter is that he or she is living, and that life should not be taken away. If a man and woman decide to have sex, there is always a potential risk of the woman becoming pregnant. With that in mind, the two partners should always be ready for a baby to come. In this scenario especially, abortion should be considered illegal. The only scenario that I could accept abortion is one where a woman is sexually assaulted, and because of the assault, is pregnant with a baby that she did not intend to conceive. Other than that, the process of abortion should be illegal and should not ever be a consideration for those couples that decided to have sex and risk the chance of a pregnancy. The problem as I see it is that society has accepted abortion as a fact in everyday life. Scientists have presented that abortion is not murder, but simply a way to remove a fetus it is born and becomes a life.

Religious beliefs are also dwindling in this day and age, as people are moving on to new innovations and scientific research that can provide for our future. Polls taken by CNN and USA Today asking people whether or not they would like to see the U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1973 overturned showed that 37 percent of people would like to see the court reverse its decision, a 9 percent change from just two years ago. The majority remained those that believed that the court should not change their decision, though the percentage dropped from 70 percent two years ago, to just 60 percent.

Even so, polls offer conflicting results.

In another poll taken by CNN and USA Today two weeks ago (from 1/24/06) with the question "Would you consider yourself Pro-Choice or Pro-Life?" The results showed that a majority 53 percent believed that they were Pro-Choice, with only 42 percent saying that they were Pro-Life. With the same question asked five years ago, the results have almost flipped themselves. Then, there was a majority 54 percent saying that they were Pro-Life, with only 42 percent saying that they were Pro-Choice. These results only further prove that our society is moving toward a society that could accept abortion as an everyday procedure, a trend I believe to be quite dangerous.

Coming from a person with a strong religious background, I believe abortion overall is wrong, and, except in cases in which involuntary impregnation is involved, should be illegal. More and more people are turning to abortion as an option to get rid of "mistake" that was made when they had sex in the first place. Even if a particular situation comes to the point where the woman is impregnated, there are still many other options besides abortion, including adoption. Using other options, instead of abortion, can allow the baby to live. Life, in my opinion, is paramount to any other consideration, something that is taken for granted in the increasingly impersonal world in which we live. I encourage people just to stop and think, and think of the opportunity we were given when our parents chose to give birth. We were given the opportunity to live life, and hopefully, make a difference. If a couple chooses to abort their baby, the child will never be able to have the wonderful opportunities that we often take for granted. With that said, abortion should not a consideration for women who were not sexually assaulted, and if need be, adoption should be the last resort for couples that do not want to keep their child.
